Every artist performing in Vincent York's Jazzistry has a distinguished career as an independent professional jazz musician. The personality of each musician and the character of each instrument contribute to the collective voice that tells this historic and modern American story.

As Jazzistry's bandleader, Vincent York uses a wealth of professional artistry to unveil the story of jazz to audiences of all ages, time and again, each time with different twists and fresh interpretation.

  TRUMPET, FLUGELHORN   

Dwight Adams(Detroit) was marked as a gifted musician from his work with the Teddy Harris New Breed Be-Bop Society Orchestra at the age of 16. Winner of Metro Times 1993 and 1996 Spirit of Detroit awards, he leads The Dwight Adams Quartet, is featured in many Detroit bands, has toured with Stevie Wonder, and has played and recorded with Vincent York's New York Force.

Marcus Belgrave (Detroit) is a noteworthy name in the national and international jazz scene. In 1970, with Harold McKinney, his direction of the Metro Arts Complex jazz program led eventually to creating the present day Jazz Development Workshop and its repertory orchestra, the New Detroit Jazz Ensemble. His extensive touring history keeps him connected to major performances and recording projects on both coasts.

Rayse Biggs (Detroit), a student of Marcus Belgrave's Jazz Development Workshop, has charted his own performance course with Wendell Harrison, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie and others. With the rock group Was Not Was, he made television appearances on Arscenio Hall Show and Saturday Night Live, and toured Japan and Europe. Rayse has also acted on stage, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and in film.

  PIANO   

Alma Smith (Detroit) is affectionately known as the Countess of Swing. She began playing piano as a child, influenced by Thomas Fats Waller and Nat King Cole. As a teen, she toured the West Coast as a member of Counts and the Countess, a Cole-style trio. Alma also plays vibraharp and Hammond B-3 organ, has recorded her own swinging melodies on CD's and has performed in clubs, on television and radio, and toured the U.S. In 1995, she received the Legends in Jazz International Award.

  GUITAR, BANJO   

Ron English (Detroit) is a performer, composer, educator, clinician and adjudicator. He has taught at universities, worked with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Motown groups and recorded with the Lyman Woodard Organization and Rahsan Roland Kirk. An integral part of Detroit's jazz scene since the 60's, he was awarded Metro Detroit's Best Guitarist 1991 and 1993.

  BASS  

John Dana (Detroit) is a respected musician, educator and composer. His working experience is wide-ranging and includes stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Rita Moreno and the Glenn Miller Orchestra as well as Storytellers, a Detroit-based group teaching ethnomusicology to youth. Dana has been a fixture in Detroit's jazz scene since the 1960's.

  DRUMS  

George Bennett (Ann Arbor) is an electronic as well as an acoustic percussionist and is recognized for his versatility in a variety of musical styles. A performer in clubs, theaters and concert halls, he has also done studio recording of commercials and jingles. He leads the George Bennett Jazz Group and has worked with artists such as The Sun Messengers and Mose Allison, among many others.
